"Competence is the ability of an individual to do a job properly."

WHAT IS THE COMPETENCE MAPPING TOOL?

The Competence Mapping Tool (CMT) for the Marine Renewables Sector is an innovative online custom-made software tool enabling visualisation of the sub-sectors, occupations and competences in the marine renewable energy sector. The CMT was developed by the Aqua-RET consortium to fulfil the need for transparency in the sector.

WHO IS THE CMT AIMED AT?

The tool can be used by various audiences; employers, employees, training organisations, awarding bodies and individuals.

1) Employers can use the competences to form the basis of job descriptions and roles and aid in staff recruitment. It can also be used for staff development in terms of skills analysis to identify gaps in skills and knowledge in existing staff.

2) It can be used by training organisations to identify gaps in their curriculum and inform the development of new courses.

3) The tool can be used by awarding bodies by facilitating the development of new courses and also as a means to help recognise both formal and informal learning in terms of knowledge, skills and competences.

4) The tool can be used by employees and individuals to identify competences that they have which could be transferred to other sub-sectors and also to identify competences that they may not have but which are necessary for them to progress further in their career. Users from ancillary sectors can identify competences they have which are relevant for various sub-sectors of the marine renewable energy sector.

HOW IS THE CMT STRUCTURED?

The tool has two interfaces:

COMPETENCES MAPPING (click to expand)

The ‘Competences’ interface is presented in four categories:

1) Sub-sectors: A list of the sub-sectors of the Marine Renewable Energy Sector

2) Occupations: A list of the associated occupations displayed for each of the sub-sectors

3) Competences: A list of the associated competences displayed for the occupations

A Competence is ‘the proven ability to use knowledge, skills and personal, social and/or methodological abilities, in work or study situations and in professional and personal development. In the context of the European Qualifications Framework, competence is described in terms of responsibility and autonomy.’ For more information visit http://ec.europa.eu/eqf/terms_en.htm

4) Levels: the associated levels in the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)

The EQF aims to relate different countries' national qualifications systems to a common European reference framework. Individuals and employers will be able to use the EQF to better understand and compare the qualifications levels of different countries and different education and training systems. For more information visit http://ec.europa.eu/eqf/about_en.htm

COURSES (click to expand)

The ‘Courses’ interface is presented in four categories:

1) Sub-sector: A list of the sub-sectors of the Marine Renewable Energy Sector

2) Occupations: A list of the associated occupations displayed for each of the sub-sectors

3) Competences: A list of the associated competences displayed for the occupations

4) Courses: the associated Aqua-RET courses which provide the competences
